How to Shop Frugally
Why should you learn to shop frugally? Simple. With the way inflation has hit the market, just about everything seems to be out of common man’s reach! From simple groceries to gas prices to interest rates for housing loans, everything seems to be increasing by leaps and bounds, and with great speed at that!
What can you do to save yourself from such a situation? Obviously, you cannot prevent inflation, neither could you request a pay raise to your boss; so the only option left is to learn about ways to save money. Since we often tend to overspend our budget in shopping, frugal shopping is the focus of this article!
First of all, frugal shopping may seem to be quite difficult at first, especially if you are used to spending lavishly, then taking loans to repay that debt, and then using your credit card to repay those loans, etc.
The first thing you need to do is to motivate yourself to shop frugally. Tell your mind why is it that you want to shop frugally – do you want it to cut down your household expenditure, or to save enough money to repay an existing debt, or to save money for future? You need to have a clear-cut goal before you get started.
If you think you already spend your cash wisely, here is some food for thought:
1. Do you buy a lot of junk foods every week, and then complain about the rising food prices when you don’t have enough money to buy your regular groceries? Remember that junk foods are far more expensive than groceries, so cutting down on junk foods should be your first priority!
2. Do you buy the latest and greatest gadgets and gizmos from the market, and then don’t use them at all? Unless the gadget is of any use to you, there is really no need to spend cash on it just so you could flaunt it in front of your friends and office colleagues!
3. Do you tend to spend more on shopping than your budget would allow you to, even when you have existing loans to repay? It is time to check your buying impulse!
Remember that frugal shopping is not at all hard; all you need is to exercise self-discipline, and use a little bit of commonsense and discretion. Here are three frugal shopping tips to help you get started:
1. Use credit cards wisely: If you always carry the plastic with you, it would naturally trigger the buying impulse in you! That is why most of the time I leave my card at home and just carry cash. First of all, I make a list of items I am going to buy, and take enough cash for that. I use credit cards only when I need to purchase something really expensive, but I make sure that such occasions don’t come too often!
2. Make the best use of coupons: Search for coupons you can use to buy your necessities. Remember that coupons and discounts are available for almost all items; from DVDs to ebooks to newspapers and magazines, you are sure to find coupons for all of them.
Make sure that you use coupons only for buying important things! If you use coupons for mindless shopping, you would lose money instead of saving it!
3. Procrastinate: You know what, this is one of the tricks I have used successfully to get rid of my buying impulse. Whenever a fancy item catches my eyes, I just note down its name and description in my notebook so that I could ponder over it once I get back home.
And the very next morning I would wonder why I had even fancied that item in the first place! You would be surprised how a little procrastination on your part could you help you save big money on shopping!
